Working as a team with an informatics student from Sungkyunkwan University, Eunsu Jung, we conducted a research that involved in a field study about the role of information and technology on popular eateries in Seoul, especially near the Sunkyungkwan University campus.
Information, Culture, and Technology in Modern South Korea @ Sungkyunkwan University
Informatics Exploration Seminar w/ the University of Washington, Summer 2019

Research

Places We Visited:

- Onion Cafe
- 남도분식
- 차 마시는 뜰
- 창화당
- 동백양과점

Methods:

Qualitative and quantitative research
Gathered data both from our first-hand experience and social media (Instagram):

- Who were visiting these locations? Locals? Tourists?
- Number of hashtags of each location = popularity? Influence on the popularity from the number of hashtags
- Wait times = the popularity on social media?
- Did we feel satisfied with the outcome of waiting for this many minutes?

Infographics
Based on these observations, we compare and contrasted two bar graphs side-by-side to observe any correlation between the # of Instagram hashtags and the wait times (inside & outside) of each of these eateries

Experimental mapping -- we created a map of all the locations of these eateries and rated them with fullness of hearts based on our experience

Things we need to consider next:
- Does the size of the location affect the wait time? Consequently, no correlation between the wait times and the popularity on social media?
- Time spent in each location: does it take longer for the the food to be delivered and be eaten at your table at one location than another?

Without Technology?
Having to discover these "Instagram-Famous" eateries on the Instagram app based on how many hashtags they have, how would people who do not use Instagram discover these locations and know that they are actually hot on Instagram?
While passerby can tell by the long line outside the location, how else would they learn more about each of these locations?
- Clipboard outside the door: pictures and menu of the food
- Windows: display of the kitchen and tables (surprisingly every eatery we visited has windows!)

Photo Essay
Documented our experience with photos. I tried to take them as "Instagram-worthy" pictures, like those in the Instagram app.
