Research
Places We Visited:
-
Onion Cafe
-
남도분식
-
차 마시는 뜰
-
창화당
-
동백양과점
Methods
-
Qualitative and quantitative research
-
Gathered data both from our first-hand experience and social media (Instagram):
-
Who was visiting these locations—locals or tourists?
-
Does the number of hashtags reflect each location’s popularity? How do hashtags influence that popularity?
-
Do wait times correlate with social media popularity?
-
And ultimately, was the wait worth it?
Infographics
Based on these observations, we compared two bar graphs side by side to examine the correlation between the number of Instagram hashtags and the wait times (both inside and outside) at each eatery.
Experimental Mapping
We created a map of these eateries and rated each one using a heart scale based on our experience.
Things to consider next:
-
Does the size of a location affect wait time? If so, could that explain a lack of correlation between wait times and social media popularity?
-
Time spent at each location: Does food preparation and dining time vary significantly between eateries?
Without technology:
If people didn’t use Instagram to discover these “Instagram-famous” spots through hashtags, how would they find them and know they’re popular?
While passersby might notice long lines, what other signals help communicate popularity or appeal?
-
Menus or photo displays posted outside
-
Window visibility into the kitchen and seating areas (notably, every eatery we visited had windows)
